Heritage Meets Modern Living
Cookham Farm represents a thoughtful approach to barn conversion design, where agricultural heritage and contemporary family living unite. This project transformed a redundant farm structure into a refined residence that honours its rural origins while meeting the demands of modern life.
The Vision: Preserving Character While Creating Comfort
The original barn possessed a strong architectural presence with established openings but lacked thermal efficiency, a common challenge in heritage barn conversions. The design strategy centred on retaining the building's simplicity and solid form, working sensitively with existing structural elements to achieve planning approval through considered rural design. Throughout the process, maintaining visual harmony with the countryside setting remained paramount, ensuring the converted structure would sit comfortably within its agricultural context while delivering the thermal performance essential for modern family living.
Contemporary Intervention with Restraint
Rather than imposing modern aesthetics, the conversion strengthened the barn's inherent proportions through carefully controlled upgrades. Strategic glazing was introduced to frame landscape views and flood interiors with natural light, all while preserving the understated rural character that makes barn conversions so appealing.
