Conversation Before Concept
When people picture their first meeting with an architect, they often imagine us arriving with a notebook full of ideas – ready to tell them how their home could look, before we’ve properly understood how they actually live in it.
That’s not how we work at Hardwick Studio Architects.
We won’t turn up, walk around your home, and disappear to sketch something we think looks magnificent. We’ll survey your property, but then we’ll do far more listening than talking. Because before a single line is drawn, we need to understand what you’re trying to achieve, what you love about your current home, and – just as importantly -what compromises you’re currently living with.
It Starts With Your Everyday Reality, Not Our Opinion
As a family-run, chartered architect-led practice working across Swadlincote, Burton on Trent, Ashby, Melbourne and the wider South Derbyshire, North West Leicestershire and East Staffordshire area, we’ve learned that the best designs never start with our opinion of your house. They start with your everyday reality.
That means asking questions most people don’t expect from an architect:
- Where does the family actually eat breakfast?
- What room do you avoid because it doesn’t work?
- What are you tiptoeing around, working with, or simply putting up with?
The answers matter far more to the design than any style reference or Pinterest board – because they tell us what your home actually needs to do for you.
The Everyday Problems Behind Every Great Design
Every project we take on is rooted in a real, lived problem. A few examples we hear often:
- A narrow, closed-off kitchen that makes cooking, eating and family life feel cramped and disconnected from the rest of the house.
- The need for a quiet corner or home office – a designated space to work from home, separate from family noise, rather than a laptop balanced on the kitchen table.
- A dedicated space for a hobby or craft – a workshop, studio, music room or sewing space that’s been “managed” from a spare room or garage corner for years.
- Growing children needing more room – bedrooms that worked for toddlers but no longer suit teenagers, or families simply running out of space to spread out.
- Specialist care or living arrangements for relatives – whether that’s an annexe for ageing parents, step-free access, or simply a layout that supports multi-generational living with dignity and privacy for everyone.
None of these problems are solved by a house that merely looks impressive. They’re solved by a house that’s been designed, deliberately, around the people living in it.
We’re Problem Solvers Who Happen to Design Beautiful Spaces
Clients rarely come to us wanting a striking building for its own sake. They come to us because something about their current home doesn’t work – and they want it to.
That’s the job, as we see it: we’re problem solvers first. Every project is an exercise in finding a solution that’s genuinely right for your family – one that removes the daily friction, gives you the space you’re missing, and makes your home fit the way you actually live.
The light-filled, considered, bespoke spaces we’re known for aren’t the goal in themselves. They’re what happens when a well-understood problem meets a well-designed solution. The stunning result is a by-product of getting the brief right — not a substitute for it.
Of course, we love offering ideas and inspiration too. We thrive on finding the clever, unexpected solution that solves your problem and looks wonderful — that’s where the enjoyable part of our job lives. But suggestion always follows understanding, never replaces it.
As we say to every new client at the very start of a project:
A good design brief is 90% listening and 10% solving. Get the listening right, and the solving becomes obvious.
It’s a principle that shapes how we run every first conversation, every site visit, and every set of drawings that follows.
How This Shapes the Way We Work
This listening-first approach runs through every service we offer, whether it’s a home extension, a barn conversion, a self-build, or a commercial project. It’s also why local knowledge matters so much to us – understanding the site and location is only half the picture. Understanding the people who’ll actually live or work there is the other, more important half.
Details Matter
The curve of a roofline, the direction a window catches the morning light, the proportion of a doorway, the shadow lines where materials meet — these are the decisions that separate a house from a home. We think carefully about every line, shape and angle, because it’s these small, considered choices that give a building its character and make it feel right the moment you walk through the door.
Let’s Start Your Conversation
Whatever the project – a cramped kitchen that no longer works, a barn with real potential, a growing family needing more space, a renovation, a change of use, or a relative who needs a home that supports their care – we’d love to hear about it.
As an independent, family-run chartered architect practice, we work across the Midlands – with particularly deep local knowledge of Swadlincote, Burton on Trent, Ashby, Melbourne, Ticknall and Repton, and the wider South Derbyshire, North West Leicestershire and East Staffordshire area. Our services span new builds and self-builds through to barn conversions, extensions, renovations and change of use projects.
We’re based in Swadlincote, where you’re always welcome to pop into our office for a coffee and an informal chat about your project. We’re just as happy to visit you at your home or property, wherever you are in the Midlands.
Either way, we start the same: a free, informal conversation, no pressure and no obligation, where the only agenda is understanding you, your home, and what’s really driving the need for change. Everything that follows – the drawings, the ideas, the finished space comes from that conversation.
We’ll always bring it back to making it about you: designing for how you live, solving the challenges and compromises you’re facing, and making it look wonderful along the way.
Get in touch and let’s start with your story, not ours.
